Health Sciences (EMS/PreNursing)

Principles of Health Care and Medical Terminology are covered for both groups of students. EMS students will then complete Healthcare Specialist: Emergency Medical Tech. Pre-Nursing students will complete Healthcare Specialist: CNA.  Students gain skills common to specific health career topics such as patient nursing care, dental care, animal care, medical laboratory, public health, and an introduction to healthcare systems. Lab experiences are organized and planned around the activities associated with the student’s career objectives. Students are prepared with language skills necessary for effective, independent use of health and medical reference materials.

EMS

Students will develop lifesaving skills practiced in class and on ambulance ride-outs. They will perform skills in airway management, splinting, CPR, and how to manage a respiratory emergency.

Certifications: Students successful completion of the course meets national requirements to test for certification as an NREMT.

Healthcare Specialist Capstone: Emergency Medical Tech

Dual Credit - This pathway has the potential to earn dual credit with Ivy Tech: HLHS 100 (3 credit hours), HLHS 101 (3 credit hours), PARM 102 (7.5 credit hours), HSPS 125 (3 credit hours)

Pre-Nursing

Students will gain skills and work as a nursing assistant.  These skills will be applied during clinicals at a long-term care facility.

Certifications: Students who successfully complete this course are eligible to apply to sit for the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) certification exam for nursing assistants.

Healthcare Specialist Capstone: The capstone experience for this pathway is a final course within the sequence. The course is embedded into the school day.

Dual Credit: This pathway has the potential to earn dual credit with Ivy Tech: HLHS 100 (3 credit hours), HLHS 101 (3 credit hours), HLHS 107 (3 credit hours)
